The great Dzogchen yogi Dru Gyalwa Yungdrung Rinpoche (1242–1290) was the 57th lineage holder of the Dzogchen Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung.

Dru Gyalwa Yungdrung Rinpoche said: “May the profound reality of this ultimate teaching, the actual practice composed in an easily understood order, become beneficial for all worthy students.” Thus, he spoke with deep aspiration and dedication.

This is an important Dzogchen text, accessible to anyone engaging in the View, Meditation, Conduct, and contemplation of unsurpassable Dzogchen.

Now, due to repeated requests from many of his Western students, Geshe Tenzin Gelek Rinpoche has kindly agreed to teach this text, The Practice Manual of the Experiential Transmission of the Victorious Ones, by Dru Gyalwa Yungdrung Rinpoche. We are sincerely grateful for his commitment to share this profound teaching and the opportunity to receive and practice this teaching, making our lives truly meaningful.

Geshe Tenzin Gelek Rinpoche teaches in a traditional style, just as he received from his root lama. He explains each word and line of the text thoroughly, from beginning to end. The Practice Manual of Gyalwa of the Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung

The contents of the preliminary, main practice and ultimately lead to realization and manifestation of the Practice Manual of the Experiential Transmission of the Victorious Ones.

This teaching of the Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung has four kinds of instruction:

  1. The outer aspect of the General View
  2. The inner aspect of the practical guidance of the secret instructions
  3. The secret aspect of nakedly seeing Rigpa.
  4. The innermost secret aspect of the ultimate realization of the Natural State

Now here, extracting the essence from all of these, summarizing the key points, condensing the realization, uncovering the hidden aspects, there are three main parts to putting it into practice:

A. First, completely purifying the mindstream through the preliminary practice. B. Next, ripening and liberating the mindstream through the main practice C. Finally, actualizing realization in the mindstream through the auxiliary practice

The contents of the preliminary practices of the Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung

A. First, completely purifying the mindstream through the preliminary practice has three main subjects:

  1. First, the individual practices in detail
  2. Second, the ordinary practices done together
  3. Third, the signs of progress of the practice

First, the individual practices in detail has three parts:

A. The Practice of the Three Precious Preliminaries B. The Practice of the Three Common Preliminaries C. The Practice of the Three Extraordinary Preliminaries

A. The Practice of the Three Precious Preliminaries:

  1. The teaching of empowerment that blesses the mindstream
  2. The teaching of impermanence that completely tames the mindstream
  3. The teaching of the confession of sin that purifies the mindstream

B. The Practice of the Three Common Preliminaries:

  1. Generating the Mind of Enlightenment based on immeasurable compassion
  2. Taking refuge based on faith and devotion
  3. Offering the mandala based on pure perception

C. The Practice of the Three Extraordinary Preliminaries:

  1. Purifying habitual tendencies and obscurations through the recitation of mantras
  2. Accumulating merit through the offering of the illusory body
  3. The entering of blessings through devotional prayer
